Arianna Khmelniuk is an Oakland-based experimental artist and researcher working at the intersection of olfaction, media, and cultural analysis. She is the founder of Zapah Lab, a research-driven studio exploring scent as a critical and aesthetic medium, and Olfactory Playground, a platform for workshops and public experiments in sensory perception, language, and place.
Her practice investigates how smell operates as a cultural, political, and affective infrastructure—shaping perception, identity, memory, and power—across art, media, and everyday life. Working across installation, archives, participatory formats, and publishing, she treats olfaction not only as material but as a method for reconfiguring attention, embodiment, and social relations.
Khmelniuk completed her MFA in Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley, and her work has been presented at institutions including UC Berkeley, Stanford University, MIT, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. She has participated in international programs such as the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts and has received grants and support for her research and artistic work internationally.
